Windermere bouncing back
POSTED 5 Feb 2002 . BY
Four of Lake Windermere's most popular attractions have joined forces to attract visitors back to the Lake District.

The Aquarium of the Lakes, the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole, Windermere Lake Cruises and the World of Beatrix Potter have formed a consortium and launched the 'We're bouncing back' campaign.

The campaign, aimed specifically at family day visitors, will feature a series of special events at each of the attractions through the year. The consortium will also distribute more than 100,000 leaflets designed to raise awareness of the lake and its surrounding countryside in Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle.

'There are millions of potential visitors within a few hours drive of Windermere and we're concentrating on trying to attract those families back,' said Cathy Burrows from the Aquarium of the Lakes. 'We're suggesting visitors head for the quieter southern tip of the lake where they can park, visit the Aquarium then catch a steamer to the other attractions to avoid road traffic congestion.'

As well as the 'We're bouncing back' campaign, the four attractions are trying to win back visitors with a range of new features. The Aquarium of the Lakes has recently re-opened following a £600,000 re-development programme, while Windermere Lake Cruise's fleet is undergoing renovation. The World of Beatrix Potter is unveiling a centenary clock to celebrate the first publication of the Tale of Peter Rabbit and the Lake District Visitor Centre an exhibition on life in the Lake District in 2002.
