Visitor numbers exceeding expectations at 9/11 Memorial Museum

The number of visitors to the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York is exceeding expectations, with over 300,000 people having visited the museum since it opened in late May.

The museum has been created to commemorate those who lost their lives in the tragic event 13 years ago, with the project realised in an architectural coalition between Davis Brody Bond and Snøhett.

The US$700m (€508m, £418m) museum is divided into two main exhibition spaces, seeking to both commemorate and educate about the 2001 disaster, using a combination of artefacts and narrations of stories bringing a human element to the site.

Some of the 10,000 items exhibited in the museum include the remains of a firefighter's axe, car doors and salvaged uniforms, alongside the iconic last column to be removed from the World Trade Center site.

The 9/11 Memorial Museum costs US$24 (€17, £14) to enter, with admission remaining free to the original memorial centre opened after the disaster.
