Virgin Active opens flagship Collection club in Cape Town
POSTED 01 Dec 2016 . BY Tom Walker
Virgin Active is one of the largest fitness chains in South Africa
Virgin Active has launched its latest full-service Collection club in the re-generated Silo District in Cape Town, South Africa.

Located on the city’s V&A Waterfront – next to the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa which opens in 2017 – it is the first Virgin Collection Club in Cape Town and the fifth in South Africa.

Virgin Active has segmented its clubs to three different formats – Collection (formerly know as Classic), Lifecentre and RED.

The 3,912sq m (sq ft) club features a 20m lap pool and “high performance training facilities”, including the latest Technogym Artis collection of cv and strength equipment, as well as a number of Wattbikes.

The club will offer a wide programme of group exercise classes – including pilates, mind & body and suspension yoga.

Wet areas include spa pools, steamrooms and saunas; luxurious his & hers changing rooms; and rain, sensation and power showers.

There is also a Kohu-branded café and wine Bar serving nutrient-rich foods; a shoeshine service; a FoxBox Finishing Bar and Groom Den providing men’s and women’s grooming services.

A signature feature is a fully equipped business suite, designed to “fulfill the needs of budding entrepreneurs and busy executives” with Mac work stations, wireless printing, unlimited wifi and lockers with charging plugs.

Staff on hand at the club includes biokineticists, physiotherapists and personal trainers.

Virgin Active Africa managing director Ross Faragher-Thomas said: “It has been a long-held aspiration for us to have a Collection club in all major metropolitan cities in South Africa.

“We are privileged to be part of the remarkable transformation of the Silo area of the Waterfront and have curated a highly personalised, premium health and wellness experience for this spectacular space”.

Virgin Active is estimated to hold more than a 50 per cent market share of the fitness sector in South Africa. As well as the five premium Collection clubs, it operates 114 mid-market Lifecentre sites and a number of low-cost RED clubs.

The company is on target to open 15 new clubs in Southern Africa this year, including five RED clubs.
