Tower Museum has reopened
POSTED 31 Oct 2006 . BY Helen Patenall
Tower Museum in Derry, Ireland, has reopened following a complete revamp.

The existing Story of Derry exhibition, which tells the story of the city from its earliest geological formation to the present day, has been revamped. It now includes a series of artefacts, including Bronze Age weapons and medieval objects.

Additional features comprise new footage on how the city was devastated during the Troubles and, in the new Post-Conflict section, how Derry is now establishing itself in business, tourism and development.

A new exhibition called An Armada Shipwreck – La Trinidad Valencera tells the story of La Trinidad Valencera, one of the largest ships in the Armada fleet. It sank in Kinnagoe Bay just off the Donegal coast in 1588 and was discovered in 1971 by the City of Derry Sub-Aqua Club.

The museum also boasts a new DVD and computer suite.

To mark its reopening and to encourage local people to visit the attraction, the museum will be free to the public for the next two weeks.

Mayor Helen Quigley said: “I’m extremely proud of our museum service which has moved into the modern age. Our buildings have been modified to make them more accessible to everyone and now feature audio-visual resources with replica objects to make all our exhibitions perfect for schools.” Details: www.derrycity.gov.uk
