The second terrorist attack to target Bali within the last three years – killing 22 and injuring 123 people – could severely damage the island’s tourism industry.
While a number of countries have issued travel guidance not to visit the resort outright, the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) was reluctant to speculate the full consequences of a second wave of atrocities but admitted that the recurrence did no favours to the industry.
A spokesperson said: “It is difficult to estimate the tourism impact of the incident at this point.
"It could be, however, very different to the effects of the October 2002 bombing.”
Bali attracted 1.46 million foreign visitors in 2004 – 35 per cent of Indonesia’s total foreign visitor arivals. Details: www.pata.org
