The Statue of Liberty, which has been shut since the twin towers terrorist attacks of 11 September, 2001, may never fully open again due to security concerns.
The 151ft structure which is situated in New York’s harbour had previously welcomed up to six million tourists each year.
Currently, tourists are allowed to visit the exterior grounds and outdoor exhibits as well as the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, but the statue’s pedestal, crown and museum remain closed.
The National Park Service has confirmed that no re-opening date has yet been decided for the statue and it will remain ‘closed until further notice’ but that construction projects to upgrade its safety and security systems are continuing. Details: www.nps.gov
