SeaWorld plans Orlando's tallest and fastest rollercoaster

SeaWorld Orlando has announced plans to build the tallest and fastest rollercoaster in the theme park capital of the world – the 200-ft-tall (61m) Mako hypercoaster.

Scheduled for opening in Q3 2016, the 4,760-ft-long (1,450m) coaster – will reach speeds of up to 73mph (118kmph) and is modelled after its namesake the mako shark, which is one of the ocean’s fastest inhabitants and is known for its jumping and manoeuvrability. Switzerland-based Bolliger & Mabillard are behind the plans, with the rollercoaster designer also having created SeaWorld’s Manta and Kraken coasters.

"On Mako, you'll experience what it's like to be this apex predator, surging through the water at top speed and chasing prey throughout a massive reef," said Brian Morrow, SeaWorld's creative director. "It will be a wild mix of fear, thrills and fun. I anticipate people will come to this attraction because it's the best coaster in Orlando and it gives our guests the diversity of things to do within our park.”

SeaWorld has faced intense scrutiny over the treatment of its captive cetaceans in recent times, with the anti-SeaWorld documentary Blackfish causing a raft of problems, including proposed legislation banning Orca shows in California, a tumbling share value and loss of corporate sponsors.

SeaWorld recently made an attempt reconnect with its disillusioned audience by launching a new advertising campaign, emphasising a lasting connection between animals and people. Company president, Donnie Mills, also emphasised a change of directions for 2016, promising to “up the thrills”, suggesting a larger focus on the theme park element of Seaworld.

Mako will be surrounded by a shark and shipwreck-themed area covering 87,000sq ft (8,000sq m). Included will be a shark encounter, Sharks Underwater Grill, themed shops and education experiences.
