The Scottish Executive is investing £1m over the next two years in a new scheme designed to recognise the value of non-national museums and galleries in Scotland.
The new Significance Scheme – to be managed by the Scottish Museums Council – will identify, protect and promote collections of outstanding national or international importance, in a similar manner to the English Designation scheme.
Scottish culture minister Patricia Ferguson said: “Scotland’s museums and galleries contain collections which celebrate our proud and distinguished history, providing a fascinating and educational experience for all those who visit.
“The Significance Scheme will, for the first time, allow us to fully recognise many of these collections for their national contribution to our identity, learning and tourism.”
Joanne Orr, CEO of the Scottish Museums Council, added: “The initiative will also contribute greatly to raising standards in the care, management and public service delivery of such collections for the benefit of future museum audiences.” Details: www.scotland.gov.uk
