AFC Wimbledon stadium fate to be decided in two weeks following consultation
POSTED 28 Jul 2016 . BY Matthew Campelli
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has declared culture a 'core priority' for his administration
Recently-elected mayor of London Sadiq Khan has launched a 14 day consultation concerning AFC Wimbledon’s planning application for a new stadium.

The consultation is being undertaken by the Greater London Authority (GLA) before the mayor makes a final decision. It has called on any stakeholders to put forward any other additional information.

AFC Wimbledon – recently promoted to League One – had seen its application for an 11,000-capacity stadium on Plough Lane originally approved by Merton Council, although Khan’s predecessor Boris Johnson decided against ratifying the decision before he left office in May.

If no additional information if forthcoming over the next two weeks the decision will rest with Merton Council, who approved the application “unanimously”.

“The planning application we submitted to Merton Council was subject to two public consultations and a very thorough review by the council’s planning committee, along with planning officers at Wandsworth Council, and the GLA,” said the football club’s chief executive Erik Samuelson.

“All of those representatives supported the approval of the planning application. Therefore, we are confident that this further consultation will end with the planning application being returned to Merton Council.”
