Ruthin arts centre to open this month
POSTED 16 Jul 2008 . BY Tom Walker
The Ruthin Craft Centre in Denbigshire, Wales will reopen to the public on 28 July following the completion of a £4.4m redevelopment.

Designed to promote arts in the region, the revamped centre will consist of three galleries. Two of the galleries will display contemporary craft from Wales and around the world, while the third will house a special collections gallery and a retail gallery space.

There are also six studios for artists, a range of educational and residency facilities, a café and a tourist information centre.

The complex, designed by London-based architects Sergison Bates, is set around a courtyard that acts as a focal point and outdoor social space.

Funding for the centre came from a £3.15m Capital Lottery Grant from the Arts Council of Wales, one of the largest grants of its kind in North Wales. The other funders include the Welsh Assembly Government (Department of Economy and Transport), Denbighshire County Council, Ruthin Town Council and Cadwyn Clwyd.

According to Kath Davies, head of arts funding for the Arts Council Wales, the venue will both house works by famous artists as well as act as a catalyst for local arts.

"The Ruthin Craft Centre will provide a fitting platform for renowned artists to display their work, and become a source of inspiration for new and emerging makers within Wales."
