Reopening date announced for Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum
POSTED 29 Mar 2012 . BY Tom Walker
Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam will reopen to the public on 23 September following the completion of the most ambitious renovation and expansion project in its history.

Famous for its collection of modern and contemporary art, the museum is located within Amsterdam's Museumplein (Museum Plaza). It is housed in a historic building dating back to 1895, which has undergone a complete renovation.

Nearly all of the building's spaces have been converted into galleries, which will enable the first comprehensive display of Stedelijk's permanent collection.

Work also included the creation of a brand new 10,000sq m (107,000sq ft) building, designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects. The new space will house the museum's café and other amenities freeing up exhibition space in the main building.

The extension's design means that the museum's entrance will face onto the great public lawn of Amsterdam's Museumplein, creating an active common ground for the first time among the Stedelijk and its neighbours - the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Concertgebouw.

Ann Goldstein, director of the Stedelijk Museum, said: "With this long-awaited opening, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will reaffirm and strengthen its place among leading international art institutions and bring new life to Museumplein, one of the world's most important cultural landscapes."
