The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has chosen architects Renzo Piano and Zoltan Pali to design the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in California, US.

Los Angeles-based Pali is the design principal and co-founder of Studio Pali Fekete, which worked on the renovation and expansion of the Getty Villa museum among others.

Meanwhile, Piano founded the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and is behind a number of international projects, which include The Shard - opening in London, UK, in July.

Piano also designed the expansion of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is to be located at LACMA's campus.

The attraction will be housed within the 325,000sq ft (30,193sq m) former May Company building - now called LACMA West - and will explore the art, technology and business of film.

Permanent and rotating exhibitions will feature as part of the museum, which will also look at the role of film on cultures throughout the world and preserve motion picture heritage.

The academy's permanent collection currently contains more than 140,000 films and videos; 42,000 original posters; 10 million photographs; and 80,000 screenplays.

Pali said: "It is an honour and privilege to work with the Academy in bringing to life a historic, iconic building that I love with the story of motion pictures."

Piano added: "The Academy museum will take the visitor through the back door of cinema, behind the curtain, and into movie-making magic."
