Refurb of 17th Century canal-side hotel to celebrate Amsterdam's merchant past

A boutique hotel spread across a maze of waterside houses in Amsterdam’s famous canal district is embarking on an expansive renovation programme.

Interior designer Jacu Strauss is leading the revamp of the Pulitzer Amsterdam hotel’s twenty-five 17th Century canal buildings. Rooms are being stripped back to emphasise their historical features, with vintage furniture brought in to complement newly-introduced contemporary stylings. Four themed suites – dedicated to books, music, art and antiques – will take their inspiration from the trade merchants and flamboyant Dutch aristocrats who once occupied the houses.

Strauss said: “There is a real understated sophistication about Amsterdam and I have loved immersing myself in the city to influence my visions for the hotel. Each canal house has its own story to tell and I am proud to be instrumental in bringing these to life.”

The first phase of the renovation will be showcased in February 2016, when 80 guest rooms will re-open to guests, alongside the new-look Pulitzers Bar and Jansz restaurant.

The second phase will then begin, culminating in Q3 2016 with the opening of the hotel’s second wing. Once complete, the Pulitzer will feature 225 guest rooms.

Commenting on the renovation programme, the hotel’s general manager, Alexander van Gastel, said: “Our future lies in our past, we want to stay true to our roots and celebrate the history and heritage of the canal houses – the hotel’s maze of secrets and surprises are what makes Pulitzer Amsterdam unique.”

The hotel – a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts’ LVX Collection – is located in a UNESCO World Heritage site; within walking distance of Amsterdam’s famous museum district.
