Prince tribute museum gets October opening date
POSTED 26 Aug 2016 . BY Tom Anstey
The singer unexpectedly died at his studio in Minneapolis in April
Six months on from his death, a tribute to music legend Prince will come in the form of a museum at his Paisley Park home and recording complex in Chanhassen, Minneapolis.

First announced after the death of the musician in April, the tribute museum has been given an official opening date of 6 October.

First opened in 1988, the studio was designed by California-based architecture firm BOTO Design and was the home of Paisley Park Records until the music label folded in 1994. After its closure, Prince continued to live and record at the complex, which shares its name with the song “Paisley Park” – part of his 1985 album Around the World in a Day.

“Opening Paisley Park is something that Prince always wanted to do and was actively working on,” said Tyka Nelson, Prince’s sister. “Only a few hundred people have had the rare opportunity to tour the estate during his lifetime. Now, fans from around the world will be able to experience Prince’s world for the first time as we open the doors to this incredible place.”

In addition to guided tours of the complex, visitors will also get a chance to look at thousands of artefacts from the musician’s personal archives, including awards, instruments, concert wardrobes, rare music and video recordings, and vehicles.

An application for development review and business plan have been submitted to the City of Chanhassen, with Prince’s estate maintaining ownership of Paisley Park.

“The new Paisley Park museum will offer fans a unique experience, an exhibition like no other, as Prince would have wanted it,” said a joint statement from his siblings.

“Most important, the museum will display Prince’s genius, honour his legacy, and carry forward his strong sense of family and community.”
