The Prince of Wales is to become the new president of the National Trust.

Prince Charles is taking up the role following the death of the Queen Mother, who was the charity's president since 1953.

Charles Nunneley, chair of the National Trust, said: We are delighted that His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has agreed to become president of the Trust.

'Since 1995, as vice president, he has shown great interest in all aspects of our conservation work. As president we look forward to him continuing to play an invaluable role in the Trust's work, particularly as he shares our commitment to the nation's heritage, farming and rural issues.'
