Plumpton Park Zoo in Cecil County, Maryland, US, has closed after 24 years of operation.

A simple message on the zoo's website reads: "We wish to thank all of our supporters, but due to conditions beyond our control Plumpton Park has to close."

At this point it is not known what the circumstances behind the closure are, or what will happen to the zoo's animals.
