Planners weigh up £4bn Dome project
POSTED 18 Dec 2002 . BY
Britain's most ambitious planning application - for the Millennium Dome in London, is being assessed by Greenwich Council.

The plans, for what will be known as the Greenwich Peninsula, have been submitted by Meridian Delta, English Partnerships and the entertainment and sports presenter, Anschutz Entertainment Group Europe (AEG Europe). Spanning over 1,000 pages, the master-plan unveils details of a £4bn project proposing a range of leisure facilities, homes and offices.

Designed by architects, HOK Sport-Venue-Event London, the heart of the project is a £135m arena to host entertainment and sports events - on a similar scale to those promoted at AEG's Staples Centre in Los Angeles. Recent performances include the Rolling Stones, and Paul McCartney. The Dome Arena will provide London with one of the finest entertainment and sports venues in the world, said Detlef Kornett, AEG's managing director.

The arena has also been designed to cater for a variety of sports and indoor events, including football, boxing, basketball, gymnastics, figure skating, tennis and ice hockey. Built as an enclosed stand-alone structure, the arena will offer a further 62,000sq m of ancillary entertainment and leisure space to include bars and restaurants. Around 100 suites will provide flexible exhibition space and hospitality for up to 2,000 people.
