Oriental waterpark for Tenerife
POSTED 21 Aug 2008 . BY Tom Walker
The owners of animal park and aquarium, Loro Parque in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, will open an Oriental-themed waterpark later this year.

Owned by the Kiessling family, the new park is being built alongside the existing park in Adeje, on Tenerife’s south coast and will include water rides, sea lions, a children’s play area called Lost City, a wave pool, golden beaches and a surf school plus five bars and restaurants.

The park will also be home to a floating market and tea house, exotic island waterfalls and an aquarium as well as a lazy river, which, at 1.3kms will be one of the world’s longest.

In total, it will have 11 major water attractions including a six-lane speed slide and a twin cyclone ride supplied by Proslide.

Proslide is also supplying a Tornado ride for the park, which will be themed as a dragon.

Professor Ruthai, the dean of architecture at Bangkok University, has designed the park, which is themed as a Thai village with over 25 different buildings on site.

The Kiessling’s have invested over 50m euro (US$74m, £40m) in the 185,000sq m attraction, which will be launched in two phases. The first phase is due completion in the autumn of this year.

The water for the park feeds from the sea into a special reservoir where it is then desalinated and heated to 23ºC before feeding into the attractions.

The water is recycled afterwards to water the plants in the park. Siam Park’s energy comes from the first natural gas system installed in the Canaries and was specially chosen because of its lower carbon emissions, as one of the key aims of the waterpark is to minimise impact on the environment.
