October launch for SCAD Museum of Art

SCAD Museum of Art aims to provide 1sq ft of academic space for every 1sq ft of exhibition space
A new teaching museum exploring contemporary art and design is scheduled to open to the public at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia, US, on 29 October.

SCAD Museum of Art aims to provide 1sq ft (0.1sq m) of academic space for every 1sq ft (0.1sq m) of exhibition space, with galleries acting as extensions of traditional classrooms.

The second floor of the attraction features 12 classrooms that provide learning laboratories, which have been specifically designed to facilitate the study of large works of arts.

Combining the former Central of Georgia Railroad 1853 depot with 65,000sq ft (6,039sq m) of new space, the museum also features a 250-seat theatre; a terrace; and a café.

Two signature galleries are on offer at SCAD Museum of Art - the Walter O Evans Center for African American Studies and the André Leon Talley Gallery.

SCAD senior vice president for college resources Glenn Wallace said: "The museum engages with the fabric of its history, weaving textures of long ago with cutting-edge design.

"In many respects, it is a work of art in its own right - a manifestation of the dynamic and unrivalled art and design experiences that it will inspire."
