National Lottery boost for heritage sites
POSTED 31 May 2011 . BY Pete Hayman
Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge secured a confirmed HLF grant
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has confirmed that five historic attractions are to receive a share of £11m, while a further four schemes have awarded initial backing.

Plans for the restoration of HMS Alliance in Gosport, Hampshire, has been awarded the largest share of the confirmed funding, with the submarine netting £3.4m.

In addition to the restoration bid, the funding will go towards the new learning opportunities and will feature a compartment-by-compartment interpretation of the vessel.

Middlesbrough's Grade II-listed Transporter Bridge has been handed £2.6m to enable the public to access its dramatic views through a restored gondola and new lifts.

Wentworth Castle Conservatory in Barnsley has secured £2.4m towards its restoration, with the refurbished potting shed to become an interpretation gallery.

Elsewhere, Penarth Pier and Pavilion in South Wales (£1.65m) and Wakefield Cathedral in West Yorkshire (£1.58m) have also been awarded confirmed grants.

The four applicants to receive initial support include The Woodland Trust, which is seeking a £1.9m grant to help restore the UK's woodland heritage in 10 specific areas.

London's Hoxton Hall; the Middleport Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent; and Palace House and Stables in Newmarket are also a step closer to being awarded a full HLF grant.

HLF chief executive Carole Souter said: "Our £11m investment will help transform these five unique heritage sites ensuring they will still be around for everyone's enjoyment for many years to come."
