Lottery cash for six London heritage schemes
POSTED 24 Mar 2011 . BY Pete Hayman
Plans for the restoration of the Grade II-listed Upminster Old Chapel in Havering, London, is one of six schemes to receive a share of £2m from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Nearly £671,000 has been earmarked towards the scheme, which aims to bring the property - currently on English Heritage's 'At Risk' register - back into use as a heritage centre.

A £475,000 award will be used by the Wiener Library Institute of Contemporary History in order to open up its Holocaust and Nazi era archive with its first ever exhibition space.

More than £293,000 has been awarded to a project designed to document the heritage of the London Borough of Hackney between the 1948 and 2012 Olympic Games.

Waltham Forest-based African Heritage and Educational Centre has secured £239,500 for a two-year project to reveal the hidden heritage of the Olympic Park site.

The Chinese Mental Health Association has been awarded £193,000 for a two-year scheme, which will examine the history of Chinese communities living in Soho's Chinatown area.

Elsewhere, the Alliance for Inclusive Education has been allocated more than £176,100 to help the charity create a public archive featuring research wholly led by disabled people.

Sue Bowers, head of the HLF for London, said: "There are countless hidden histories across the capital, that play a vital part in our understanding of our heritage."
