The Museum of Electricity in Dorset has closed and will not reopen.
Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), which funds the museum, said it could not afford the seven figure development works needed to bring the building up to modern standards, including providing disabled access.
Nine members of staff have been made redundant and several volunteers have lost their posts.
A spokesperson from SSE confirmed that the company will be looking for other ways of providing a quality education programme in the future.
