Leisure industry on the fast track to profits

Four companies from the leisure sector make an appearance in the latest Profit Track 100 league table.

The survey, published in the Sunday Times, ranks the UK's fastest growing unquoted companies in terms of profit growth over a three year period, with profit being defined as operating profit with directors remuneration included.

Cinema operator, Cineworld, appearing at number eight, has seen annual profits growth over the period of 96.41 per cent, rising from £771,000 in 1998/1999 to £5.8m in 2001/2002. The first Cineworld opened in Stevenage in 1995 and the group now operates 30 sites.

At number 21, travel agency group, Lotus enjoyed a rise in profits of 73 per cent, from £1.1m in 1998/1999 to £5.6m in 2001/2002. Lotus offers skiing and golfing holidays under the Supertravel brand and also operates the Dial-A-Flight telephone sales service.

Caravan park operator, John Fowler Holidays comes in at 49, having seen profits for the period rise 48.52 per cent from £954,000 to £3.1m. Starting with a single caravan in the early 1950s, the company now runs 14 holiday parks in the south west of England.

Blue Anchor Leisure, another caravan park operator is at number 88, with profit growth of 34.67 per cent, up from £4m to £9.8m. Blue Anchor operates the Fantasy Island themed resort near Skegness and 21 caravan parks throughout Lincolnshire.

Profit Track 100 is compiled by independent research company, Fast Track in conjunction with PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Bank of Scotland Corporate Banking, private banking group UBS and software company Oracle. Details:wwwfasttrack.co.uk
