American chain Planet Fitness and global offering 24-Hour Fitness lead the world’s health clubs in terms of membership, according to new figures gathered as part of The 2014 IHRSA Global Report.

The findings, published by the organisation in its Global 25 list, show that Planet Fitness now boasts 4.8 million members, followed by 24-Hour Fitness with 3.8 million.

The rest of the top five come in the form of Gold's Gym International with 3 million members, Anytime Fitness with two million and Virgin Active with 1.3 million, according to IHRSA.

Other findings showed that for clubs who submitted data to the IHRSA, the worldwide industry's revenues grew from US$75bn (€54bn, £43bn) to US$78bn (€57bn, £45bn) between 2012 and 2013.

It was also found that the number of facilities in use increased from 150,000 to 160,000, while membership across the board rose from 132 million to 140 million.

Full copies of both the IHRSA Global Report and its Global 25 list are available here.
