A large fire has destroyed the 104-year-old Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.
Fire broke out at the Grade-II listed structure before 7am this morning and quickly tore through the pavilion building and West Tower. Nobody was injured in the incident, and a police cordon has been set up around the area. The cause of the blaze is currently unknown.
Around 40 fire fighters tackled the blaze at the attraction, which was only reopened in April following a large revamp. A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue said that the structure is not at risk of collapse, adding: "We believe the foundations to be safe."
The pier, which was opened in 1904, was bought in a multi-million pound deal earlier this year by brother and sister Michelle and Kerry Michael. April's revamp saw the addition of a £500,000 go-kart track, 40ft climbing wall and water wars attraction, as well as improved fairground rides, children's play area and bar and cafe facilities.
A full investigation into the fire is now underway.
