Construction begins on Herzog & de Meuron's Conrad hotel in Washington

A 360-room luxury hotel designed by Herzog & de Meuron for Hilton Worldwide in Washington is now under construction.

The Conrad Washington D.C.will feature within 10-acre mixed-use development CityCenterDC, which is being created in the heart of the US capital.

HKS Architects are collaborating on the hotel project, as are interior design firm Rottet Studio. Turner Construction Company is the project’s general contractor.

Few design details have been released, but renderings show a large, rounded building clad entirely with glass. Hilton has confirmed the hotel will feature 30,000sq ft (2,800sq m) of ground-floor retail space and a restaurant developed by chef Bryan Voltaggio – a James Beard Foundation Award finalist. The property is expected to take its first reservations in the first quarter of 2019.

“This is a historic milestone for the CityCenterDC project,” said Fabien Toscano, CEO of Qatari Diar Americas – which is developing the hotel and six other buildings in the area with real estate firm Hines. “With exceptional hotel rooms and exclusive retail elements, this new venture is in keeping with our vision of reflecting local characteristics and influences to create a destination designed to enhance the experience of everyone who stays and visits.

“We are excited for this next phase of the project as we continue to watch it grow into a world-class development set to become a new landmark in one of the world’s most influential cities.”

John Vanderslice, global head of Conrad Hotels & Resorts, added: “Conrad is known for creating inspired experiences for our guests in gateway cities and the most sought-after destinations. Washington, D.C. is one of the few epicentres of political, cultural and economic power in the world, which makes this future hotel the perfect destination for global luxury travellers.”

There is no word on whether the property will have a spa, but Conrad spas often take their inspiration from the area's surroundings, and blend luxury therapies with yoga, Pilates, personal training and lifestyle consultations.

Herzog & de Meuron have had a busy month, following on from the opening of their extension to London’s Tate Modern. HKS also have several projects in the pipeline, including sports stadiums for football teams the Minnesota Vikings and the University of Regina Rams.
