Harry Potter wizard for tourism
POSTED 28 Apr 2003 . BY
The Safeway Excellence in England Awards 2003 announced on 23 April included an award to the Harry Potter books and films for their Outstanding Contribution to English Tourism.

Tourism minister, Kim Howells said: Thousands of people have been inspired by the venues seen in the Harry Potter films and on behalf of the entire travel industry we wanted to recognise and honour that influence.

The Harry Potter award was one of twelve gold awards for the best of English tourism announced on St George's Day by broadcaster, Sue Lawley.

She said: These awards play a vital role in rewarding the best of English tourism and encouraging others to look to these winning businesses to emulate their success.

Amongst the winners were Claridge's of London, named Large Hotel of the Year; the Beechwood Hotel in North Walsham, Small Hotel of the Year; The Deep in Hull, Marketing in Tourism; The Eden Project in Cornwall, Visitor Attraction of the Year (over 100,000 visitors) and Muncaster Castle in Cumbria, Visitor Attraction of the Year (under 100,000 visitors).

The award ceremony fell on the same day that tourism organisation, VisitBritain launched its Enjoy England marketing campaign and all the winners were highlighted as great places for a spring break.

Joint award sponsors are Safeway, the UK's fourth largest supermarket with over 480 stores, and Hoseasons, the holiday parks to narrow boats self-catering specialist. Details: +44 (0)20 7233 2300 BGB & Associates
