The 10 UK museums and galleries selected for the Gulbenkian Prize for Museum of the Year 2006 long list have been announced.

The top-10 comprise Cambridge and County Folk Museum; London’s Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms; Yorkshire Sculpture Park; Dorchester Abbey Museum; Bristol Dockyard Museum SS Great Britain; Museum of Flight in East Lothian; Hunterian Museum in London; Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre; National Waterfront Museum, Swansea; and Collection: Art and Archaeology in Lincolnshire.

Six of the projects have received Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grants worth £27m.

Chair of the judges, Lord Winston, said: “This year’s long list shows how museums and galleries, large and small, throughout the country are continuing to innovate and explore the boundaries.

“We, the judges, face a thrilling, if difficult, task ahead of us as we visit them over the coming months.”

The four finalists will be announced in April, and the winner announced on 25 May at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London.

Last year’s prize was won by Big Pit: National Coal Museum, a preserved coal mine in Wales.
