Guggenheim deputy director resigns to start new design studio
POSTED 03 Feb 2017 . BY Tom Anstey
Ari Wiseman joined as deputy director of Guggenheim in 2010
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation’s deputy director is to step down from his role in order to launch a new independent design studio with his brother.

Ari Wiseman, who took up his role in January 2010, will start the studio with brother David, which will be dedicated to the creation and exhibition of projects with galleries, museums and other artists; and programs that foster dialogue about design and nature.

Ari began his museum career in 1998 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where he served as assistant and then senior assistant for acquisitions until 2001. He then joined Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles, holding a number of positions including deputy director. He also provided continuity and leadership during the museum’s period with an interim director between 2008 and 2009.

The Guggenheim now has two major positions to fill, with Wiseman’s departure following that of former chief curator Nancy Spector, who moved to the Brooklyn Museum in 2015.

The Wiseman Studio will be devoted to David’s creations, which will be presented in exhibitions inside a former factory complex in Los Angeles.

The 30,000sq ft (2,800sq m) building will be designed by Ryall Porter Sheridan Architects’ Ted Porter. It’s expected to be completed in early 2018.
