Green light for Middlesbrough Wheel
POSTED 26 Nov 2009 . BY Pete Hayman
Middlesbrough Council has announced that a new 40m (131.2ft) observation wheel attraction will open in the town's Centre Square at the end of the month after months of delay.

The scheme, which is the result of a partnership between the council and Great City Attractions (GCA), received planning permission in April 2009 but was delayed after it was revealed in May that a suitable wheel was not available.

However, the council has now confirmed that the observation wheel will be in place in time for Christmas, while a decision will be taken by councillors in due course on whether to retain the attraction beyond the festive period.

The Wheel of Middlesbrough - the only one of its kind in north east England - is set to boast 30 observation pods, each capable of holding eight people. Pods will also feature on-board commentary, offering views across the town.

No foundation work will be required to install the wheel and GCA will carry out any necessary restoration work to the square when the wheel is removed. The council will bear no cost for the scheme.

Middlesbrough mayor Ray Mallon said: "We were disappointed not to be able to bring the wheel to Centre Square earlier in the year, but we gave an undertaking to work together to make the project happen.

"It is just the sort of initiative that marks Middlesbrough out as a major destination with real ambition and self-belief, adding to the town's reputation as a focal point both in the region and further afield."
