Ferry link to boost Welsh tourism?
POSTED 06 Jan 2009 . BY Pete Hayman
Tourism in north Devon and South Wales could be set to receive a boost in early 2010 if plans to introduce a new high-speed passenger ferry service across the Bristol Channel are successful.

The £5m Severn Seas Ferries venture, launched by Chris Marrow, aims to establish a 50-minute ferry service between Ilfracombe and Swansea, as well as an additional route between Minehead and Cardiff.

Marrow said: "There is no question about the tourism benefits. New ferry routes are always inclined to create new developments in tourism, as well as in other sectors."

In July 2007, the leader of Swansea Council, Chris Holley, welcomed the proposals. He said: "A passenger link with Devon would be a fantastic opportunity to boost tourism businesses in Swansea.

"Visitors travelling over from Ilfracombe would have the change to enjoy attractions like the National Waterfront Museum and Swansea Leisure Centre, or visit our shops, cafes and restaurants."

Due diligence has now been entered on a deal secure the use of two 'fastcat' vessels, and it is intended that passenger services will be ready to start operating between the north Devon and South Wales coasts in 2010.

It is also planned that the ferry services will be integrated with other forms of public transport, including park and ride, while plans are also in place to introduce sail and drive packages.
