Argentina and Uruguay to launch joint bid for FIFA World Cup
POSTED 08 Jan 2016 . BY Tom Walker
Estadio River Plate, the home stadium of the Argentina national team, would host games if the 2030 bid is successful
Argentina and Uruguay are set to launch a joint bid to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The plans for a shared bid were confirmed by presidents of the two countries yesterday (7 January) at a news conference in the Uruguayan city of Colonia.

The 2030 tournament has been selected for the bid as it will mark the 100th anniversary of the FIFA World Cup – the first edition of the tournament was held in Uruguay in 1930.

Mauricio Macri, President of Argentina said: "We have decided that our best opportunity is to jointly nominate ourselves as candidates."

Both Macri and Uruguayan president Tabaré Vázquez are ardent football fans and have experience of football governance. Macri is a former president of Argentinian top flight club Boca Juniors, while Vazquez was president of Uruguayan side Progreso.
