Design details revealed for Jordan’s US$1.5bn Red Sea Astrarium
POSTED 07 Jun 2013 . BY Aoife Dowling
Detailed architectural designs have been revealed for Jordan’s first billion dollar themed tourist destination, which is set to transform the coastal city of Aqaba.

The 1m sq m (10.7m sq ft) Red Sea Astrarium (RSA) resort will include an iconic ‘Astrarium’ building, four five-star hotels, ‘Old’ and ‘New’ waterfronts with expansive retail and dining facilities, and a world-class theatre.

The resort will be designed to become a diverse leisure destination and will feature a multi-cultural bridge that connects past, present and future, with the aim of bringing together people of all cultures, backgrounds and age groups.

Distributed within the ‘Astrarium’ building and the two waterfronts will be 16 entertainment attractions and experiences, 15 of which are designed and built by Amman-based Rubicon Group Holding (RGH). The 16th attraction will be based on the CBS-owned Star Trek franchise, designed by Paramount Pictures.

The RGH-designed attractions include a 4D cinema, an indoor themed water park, as well as innovative i-Ride Wonders.

Another highlight will be the Cradle of Inspiration attraction – a journey through space and time, which explores the nature of creativity and inspiration, aboard a ride system.

An Adventure Centre will also feature where guests can train for extreme adventures like sky diving, rock climbing, scuba diving, or even piloting a submarine.

The resort will host the American Museum of Natural History's Silk Road Exhibition throughout its Hijazi Gardens.

Technology and Interactive experiences will include a global first for 4D inverted simulation that is different on every ride.

Chief commissioner of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone, Dr. Kamel Mahadin said: “The entertainment resort will undeniably transform the Aqaba region and make it a high-end tourism hub for Jordan.

“It will do so while telling stories from our regional culture and those of others, integrating alternative energy sources, and promoting the development of the entertainment industry in Jordan.”
