Dahl Museum claims BGTW tourism award
POSTED 13 Nov 2006 . BY Helen Patenall
The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, won the Best UK Tourism Project award at the British Guild of Travel Writers’ (BGTW) 2006 Tourism Awards.

The accolade was awarded for the museum’s story centre, which “reaches out to children of all backgrounds and convinces them that reading, writing and story telling can be tremendous fun. The museum also has an active outreach programme aimed at those whose parents may not be natural museum goers and also caters for two school visits each day.”

The Durban Vision, Madagascar, won the Globe Award for the best major tourism project worldwide for protecting one million hectares of habitat and benefiting local communities, with a percentage of national park fees being used to build schools and clinics and train the slash-and-burn farmers in sustainable food production.

Shinta Mani Hotel and Institute of Hospitality in Cambodia was awarded Best Overseas Tourism Project for its training initiative, which helps poor people find work in the local hotel industry.

British runners up included the Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow; the Jersey Heritage Trust for transforming historic coastal forts into holiday homes and SS Great Britain, Bristol, for restoring the famous steam ship.

The British Guild of Travel Writers – founded in 1960 – is an association of more than 270 professional travel writers, editors, photographers, producers, radio and television presenters. Details: www.btgw.org
