The Hayward Gallery, part of the South Bank Centre, has temporarily closed for refurbishment after receiving £1.3m from the Arts Lottery Council.
The grant goes towards the £1.8m cost of building a new foyer extension, which will include a space for public events and corporate entertainment, a café and improved access to the gallery.
The foyer will replace the temporary wooden structure, which has housed these activities since 1994, the removal of which, will allow more daylight into the gallery. The centrepiece of the project is a mirrored glass pavilion in the shape of an ellipse and designed by the New York-based artist Dan Graham. Graham collaborated with Haworth Tompkins Architects on the scheme, which has been endorsed by English Heritage and The 20th Century Society.
'This is another important step in the redevelopment of the whole South Bank Centre following the announcement of plans for the Royal Festival Hall renovation in 2005,' said Chief executive of the South Bank Centre, Michael Lynch.
The gallery is due to reopen in October 2003. Details: www.hayward.org,uk
