Council unveils 'Nottingham Riviera' plans
POSTED 18 May 2009 . BY Pete Hayman
Nottingham's Old Market Square is set to undergo a radical transformation this summer as part of new proposals to create a temporary seaside resort in the heart of the city centre.

Around 300 tonnes of sand will be used to create the beach as part of the plans, which include bucket and spade stalls, fairground rides and the installation of a large paddling pool to complement the square's existing water feature.

The scheme, which also features traditional seaside souvenirs such as Nottingham Rock, has been drawn up by Nottingham City Council (NCC) in partnership with Mellors Group, the operator of the city's big wheel attraction.

NCC portfolio holder for culture, leisure and communities, Dave Trimble, said: "There will be loads of fun for all the family with lots of activities for children and plenty to enjoy for residents, for people coming into the city to work and for visitors and tourists.

"It takes place during the full six weeks of the summer holidays so that everyone can get a feel of the sand between their toes even if they are not able to leave Nottingham this year."

Edward Mellors of Mellors Group added: "We are planning to make the Nottingham Riviera a must visit destination for everyone this year. This is the first time anything on this scale has been done before in the UK and possibly even in Europe."

The Nottingham Riviera will open on 22 July for a six-week period.
