Plans are underway for a mountaineering visitor centre at Mount Everest.

The 100 million yuan (US$14.4m, €13.8m, £11.6m) centre is being built in Gangkar Township, Tibet, at the expense of the Chinese government. Its aim is to welcome and educate climbers who have arrived in the area to climb the famous peak.

The 84,320sq m (907,612sq ft) centre will be equipped with medical facilities, travel services, a helicopter rescue base and a mountaineering museum. It’s hoped that catering better to region’s visitors will help boost the tourism economy.

The wider tourism complex will also include a luxury hotel, tourist centre and a helipad. The project will break ground next year, with a projected opening date of 2019.

Another attraction is also under construction at Everest base camp, a museum about the mountain range and Tibetan culture that’s slated to open in 2018.
