Gordon Brown, appointed yesterday as the new Prime Minister, has announced a major reshuffle of cabinet ministers.

Tessa Jowell has been made minister for the Olympics and will be replaced by James Purnell as the new secretary of state for culture, media and sport.

Alan Johnson has been appointed as health minister and Alistair Darling has been made chancellor of the Exchequer, while former tourism minister Shaun Woodward has been made secretary of state for Northern Ireland.

Richard Caborn has stepped down as sports minister and has taken the post as the ambassador for England’s 2018 World Cup bid. He was thanked by Brown for his “outstanding contribution” to securing the 2012 Olympics for London and his services to sport over the last six years.

Caborn has been replaced by Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe.

Tony Blair handed in his resignation to the Queen yesterday afternoon after 10 years in charge, and Brown was officially made Prime Minister shortly afterwards.
