Brecon Beacons hosts Brecfest
POSTED 08 Mar 2007 . BY Helen Patenall
The Brecon Beacons National Park Authority has announced that the historic town of Brecon in Wales is set to celebrate Brecfest from 14–17 March.

The festival will feature a performance by local choristers accompanied by projections of abstract artworks at Brecon Cathedral, as well as video artworks and a display of the Brecon squirrel being projected onto Georgian buildings throughout town.

Nigel Roberts, chair for community regeneration group Brecon Action, said: “The light festival has been created to present a vision of a bright future for Brecon as the future home of the Design Centre.

“The proposed centre will add vitality to Brecon and provide a year-round attraction, increasing visitor numbers, helping businesses and providing a vibrant and dynamic impetus to the local economy.”

Powys County Council and the Welsh Assembly Government are supporting the event.

In addition, Country Park, which is located within the national park, has been awarded an eco-centre green flag for environmental achievements.

Improvements to environmental management and efficiency – including recycling, energy consumption data collection and educational environmental awareness campaigns by staff and visitors - has reduced the impact of Craig-y-nos on the environment.

Future plans include the installation of a new recycling bin unit for the public and visiting schools, information on how to create your own compost bin, the sale of fair trade produce and a comprehensive energy audit of the Country Park.

Eleri Jones, education officer for the authority, said: “This eco-centre award is a wonderful achievement for Craig-y-nos, as we can now demonstrate to the public and schools that it is possible to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and waste and promote environmental understanding.”
