Arquivio Architects' naturally integrated design wins Vilnius concert hall competition

Spanish firm Arquivio Architects has won a competition to design Lithuania’s new National Concert Hall in Vilnius with a design that integrates the building into the landscape “as naturally as possible”.

Following a brief that included a building and two concert halls, Arquivio proposed that the different elements be interconnected by an open ground floor green corridor. In addition, it sought to carefully incorporate the nearby Lutheran Garden.

The brief also instructed that the larger concert hall accommodate up to 1,700 people and the smaller hall 500, as well as outlining the need for lounge bars, a spacious lobby with views of the city and spaces for other cultural activities. The budget assigned to the project is €52m ($56.9m, £46.2m).

In response to Arquivio’s design, the competition jury commented that "the winning design stands out for a sensitive integration of the designed building into the context."

The competition was launched in February this year, with the submissions deadline in June, at which point nearly 250 proposals from around the world are said to have been received. The next step is for an agreement for the technical design of the hall to be signed with Arquivio, who have also been awarded €60,000 ($65,700, £53,300) of prize money.
