Annual free weekend breaks targets
POSTED 04 May 2007 . BY
Historic Scotland’s annual free weekend, when all its managed properties are open without the usual admission price, attracted almost 74,000 visitors.

The weekend took place over 21-22 April and recorded the second-highest ever free visitor numbers, well ahead of Historic Scotland’s target of 60,000 and 16,450 above the average free weekend turnout of around 57,450.

Fiona Docherty, head of visitor services and business development at Historic Scotland said: “We are thrilled that the weekend was such a success. It shows how much people treasure Scotland’s fabulous heritage.

”The free weekend attracts people of all ages and from all walks of life to make the most of the historic attractions at the heart of their communities.”

Extra staff were on duty at key sites and special arrangements – such as a park and ride option at Stirling Castle – were put in place to handle to the crowds.

Fiona continued: “Even though the free weekend brings exceptionally high visitor numbers, we strive to make sure their experience is as special as on any other day of the year.

”I would like to thank all the Historic Scotland staff who volunteered their services over the weekend to help us handle the extra visitors.

”They made sure that people were welcomed with a smile and that the drizzle did not dampen our visitors’ spirits.”

Attracting nearly 74,000 was especially pleasing as this year’s weekend did not coincide with a normally busy period, such as school or bank holidays.

The 2007 free weekend was supported by a nationwide TV campaign, reaching all over Scotland and the north of England.
