Jodrell Bank unveils visitor centre plans
BY Pete Hayman

Plans have been submitted to Cheshire East Council (CEC) for the creation of a new discovery centre at the University of Manchester's (UM) Jodrell Bank Observatory.

The 'live science' visitor attraction aims to attract thousands of extra visitors to the observatory, showcasing research 'as it happens' and inspire a future generation of young scientists.

Jodrell Bank's 1,000sq m (10,764sq ft) discover centre will include a Planet Pavilion entrance building, with orientation centre and a café offering views of the Lovell telescope.

A Space Pavilion accommodating a multi-purpose events, exhibition and education space and the landscaping of the site's arboretum to create a Galaxy Maze and a Space Garden are also proposed.

Funding is now being sought to carry out work at the observatory - part of UM's school of physics and astronomy, while current visitor facilities will remain open as much as possible during the scheme.

Designs for the scheme have been drawn up by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, while Capita Symonds has been appointed project manager.

Lord Keith Bradley, chair of UM's steering group for the project, said: "The redeveloped facilities at Jodrell Bank will open our doors to even more people, allowing them to engage with the University's world leading research - and inspiring young people to become the scientists of the future."

Sir Bernard Lovell, founder of the observatory and creator of the Lovell telescope, added: "The very modern design that has been developed reflects the fact that the work of Jodrell Bank is at the forefront of research into astrophysics."
