Revamp for Manitoba Children's Museum
POSTED 28 Feb 2010 . BY Tom Walker
Manitoba Children's Museum in Winnipeg, Canada, is to undergo a CA$10m (£6.2m, 7m euro) redevelopment.

Work on the attraction will include doubling the number of galleries from six to twelve, the construction of a new Welcome Centre and the renovation of the existing Arts & Exhibition Centre.

There will also be an exclusive toddler gallery, called Tot Spot, to meet the needs of the museum's youngest adventurers.

Diane Doth, executive director of the Manitoba Children's Museum, said: "We are currently working with an exhibit design firm and architects to map out our ideas, and our plans include the museum's closure for construction in Fall 2010 and grand reopening in Spring 2011."

"More than 2 million people have visited the museum since we opened here at The Forks in 1994, so although our galleries are well-loved, it is time for a major renewal."

The new 3,500sq ft Welcome Centre will provide upgraded admission amenities, while the 12 new multi-level galleries will offer "open-ended play and discovery opportunities".

The multi-functional Arts & Exhibition Centre will cater for travelling exhibits, special events, performances and rentals along with three educational classrooms for programs and workshops.

Of the CA$10m campaign funds, CA$7.3m has been raised to-date, including a federal and provincial infrastructure contribution of CA$5m towards the project.
