MGS announces main grant details
POSTED 01 Jul 2009 . BY Pete Hayman
Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS), the organisation responsible for the development of more than 340 Scottish museums and galleries, has announced details of its main grant recipients for 2009.

A total of 10 new schemes across the country will share a funding package worth nearly £156,000, while a further £50,000 has also been made available for six other projects that are already in progress.

Among the new schemes to benefit from funding is the Scottish Football Museum in Glasgow, which will receive more than £19,500 to help fund work with local care centres to provide reminiscence therapy to residents with illnesses such as Alzheimers.

Gordon Highlanders Regimental Trust has been awarded £20,000 to help develop a new, interactive project designed to strengthen the Aberdeen museum's heritage and educational experience, while the Highland Museum of Childhood Trust will receive more than £11,500 to fund the extension of its museum building in Strathpeffer.

A £14,000 grant has been awarded to Culture Sport Glasgow to improve the visitor experience at the Burrell Collection's tapestry collection, which forms part of Glasgow Museum's Recognised Collection of National Significance.

The Scottish Fisheries Museum Trust in Fife has received two grants totalling nearly £40,000 for the recruitment of a new learning and access officer and the conservation of Victorian fish casts, while Perth and Kinross Council, the University of St Andrews, Dundee City Council and Kilmartin House Trust in Argyll have also received funding.

MGS chief executive officer Joanne Orr said: "Not only are these projects helping to foster significant new partnerships but they are also contributing to important health and education agendas and will have a beneficial impact on the lives of many people across Scotland."
