London’s Crystal Palace Sports Centre up for public consultation

Boris Johnson, mayor of London, has begun a consultation process with GT Architects over the proposed plans for a sports centre at Crystal Palace, south London.

Launched on 6 October, the mayor, CSM Strategic, with FMG Consulting and GT Architects have proposed several development concepts for the sports centre. These are being pitched to the public through a series of talks and exhibitions, as well as a survey, running throughout the month.

The new plans for the National Sports Centre, originally built in 1964, include reinstating the Paxton axis, fitting in with the wider masterplan of the site, as well as removing several current buildings and a bridge link.

The Olympic-sized swimming pool is to be restored and preserved, while the interiors will be redesigned. A new crèche will be constructed alongside a soft play area and a climbing wall. Reception will be relocated with health and fitness facilities filling the old space.

Externally, an active vibrant space will be created with play facilities. The current indoor athletics track will be permanently removed due to low useage. The planners hope that by taking out the indoor track and the surrounding buildings, other facilities, such as a 25m learner pool, can be integrated into the building.

The public consultation has begun in a bid to ensure everyone's priorities can be met and future development options for the site can be established and discussed.
