Europe’s first artificial surf reef has received the green light and will be built in Boscombe, after a comprehensive seafront scheme was granted planning permission by Bournemouth Borough Council last month.
The 1,600ft (148.7m) reef will be built a quarter of a mile offshore adjacent to Boscombe pier.
The reef – part of the larger, multi-million pound regeneration of the Boscombe seaside area – will be able to produce 16ft (4.9m) high waves and breakers.
Councillor Rob Copeland said: “The scheme will enhance the area’s unique character by giving Boscombe something different, the
artificial reef.”
Construction work on the site is scheduled to begin in September 2006 and the entire development is expected to be completed in 2008.
