Designs for a 150 metre (429ft) observation tower called the i-360 have been revealed by London Eye architects Marks Barfield.
The tower, which has an illuminated beacon at its peak, measures four metres in diameter and can carry a single, air-conditioned capsule, able to take up to 100 people.
The aerodynamic capsule would be slowly raised and lowered while giving passengers 360-degree panoramic views.
Adaptable to a range of locations – from city centres to countryside – the i-360 could attract up to a million visitors per year and, pending planning permission, the design could be built in as little as two years time.
According to media reports, Marks Barfield is “pretty confident” that the inaugural i-360 will be built in the UK.
The 440ft London Eye, which overlooks the Thames, celebrated its fifth anniversary on 8 March. To date, 18 million people have visited the ferris wheel. Details: www.marksbarfield.com
