Job opportunities with South Derbyshire District Council
Head of Cultural and Community Services
South Derbyshire District Council
Salary: Up to £65,000
Job location: Derbyshire, UK
South Derbyshire is a beautiful and successful place, with a thriving visitor economy alongside an expanding business sector, and more and more people every year choosing to make our busy market towns and friendly villages their home. And this change and improvement is rooted in a deeply-held, shared set of values: a rich and continually-renewed story of ourselves.

Following a recent restructure which created a number of new Head of Service posts, we are inviting external applications for this exciting, visible and vital role. It's an extremely attractive opportunity to play your part in the future of South Derbyshire. We want to hear from credible people who can offer expert advice across their portfolio: proactive, ambitious, and happy to be visibly accountable for the success of the services you oversee.

Reporting to the Strategic Director (Corporate Resources), and with a relevant professional background, you’ll have two principal accountabilities. First, you’ll develop a new 5+ year strategy to develop the asset base available to local communities (both soft and hard assets). A critical success factor will be your plan to resource and implement it. Where additional resources are shown to be required, we’ll expect you to secure them and oversee any new-build. Second, you’ll draft and implement an overarching strategy to increase the level of external resources secured by the service.

It’s a rich and varied role, with a range of community touch-points: - from community safety, to voluntary sector support; cultural development and events planning, to sports development; youth engagement to health & wellbeing. You’ll oversee the management of a range of cultural and leisure amenities, including leisure centres, open spaces, and community facilities.

You’ll be a natural leader, but will grasp the vital role of collaboration in delivering the bigger picture. A track record of innovation will be tempered by an acute understanding of how to manage risk: you must ‘do the detail’, and be able to bring others with you. Political awareness and a commitment to communities are essential.

The rewards of living and working in this stunning, flourishing and well-connected part of the world speak for themselves; but perhaps equally important is the career boost that these exceptional roles will offer.
