Position Summary:
The aquarist internship position at the SEA LIFE Aquarium at LEGOLAND California Resort assists the Displays Team with the routine husbandry and maintenance required for its marine and freshwater exhibits. This intern will exhibit a strong work ethic, willingness to learn and work to a high standard of animal care and ethics. This position is a training ground for future paid positions in the department, such as a husbandry assistant or a level 1 Aquarist position. This position does not require diving experience, but a rescue dive certification is preferred. Also, up to date CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 training will put the candidate at a great advantage.

Scope and Responsibilities:
1. Assist the Displays staff with the animal care, cleaning and maintenance of aquarium displays, which may require snorkel or scuba diving (i.e. 200,000 gallon tropical ocean display).
2. Assist the Displays staff with diet preparation, feeding and general husbandry of aquarium exhibits as directed.
3. Maintain and prepare accurate daily records for aquarium systems, exhibit specimens, and husbandry related paperwork.
4. Maintain equipment to the standards and expectations of SEA LIFE policies and protocols.
5. Participate in specimen transports, water quality testing, quarantine, diagnosis and treatment of fish disease.
6. Deliver interactive programming to guests and guest presentations involving displays and exhibit diving.

Details of the program:
- Internships are organized in which the intern will learn about the following areas of marine science and animal husbandry:
- Animal Nutrition (diet, nutrition)
- Husbandry Maintenance (tools, exhibit upkeep) - Program Animals (reptile collection)
- Water Quality/Chemistry (water quality testing, nitrogen cycle)
- Life Support Systems (pumps, plumbing, filtration)
- Laboratory (microscope use, animal necropsy, sampling)
- Quarantine (treatment diagnosis, protocols, disease)
- Scuba Diving (gear setup, safety, diving with venomous animals)
- Taxonomy (general taxonomy)
- Public Presentations (shark and ray talk, jellyfish show, dive show)
- Final project (TBD by staff or individual depending on the needs of the SEA LIFE team)

Background and Experience:
- No extensive background is needed, but a credited program is required to apply for this position (for both high school and college credit).
- For college internships, a background in Biology or related marine biology field is required. A mentor and a project will be assigned to the intern.
- For high school internships, an interest in marine biology is required with a passion to work hard and learn. A mentor will be assigned, along with a project to be assigned by the staff.
- Students must have an interest in learning about and understanding the science of aquarium biology, fishes and invertebrates.

Education:
A High School diploma or general education degree (or equivalent education and experience) is required. Candidates working towards or possessing a two to four-year degree in Biology or a related field at an accredited academic facility is preferred. Students with a post-bachelor certification (i.e. aquarium science program) are also encouraged to apply and will be given more advanced tasks.

Other Requirements:
For college interns, a scuba certification is preferred in rescue diving or above from a recognized recreational or commercial diver training agency. The candidate will have an ability to maintain a clean/organized work environment and the ability to work effectively with limited or no supervision, and maintain a work ethic supporting the Aquarium’s mission and goals. Preferred candidates will hold a current First Aid and CPR certification. The candidate should be willing to work weekends and keep flexible hours.
