Harry Potter ride upgrades to pioneering 120fps technology

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Universal Studios Hollywood will now be experienced in 4K-HD, making it one of the most immersive media-based rides on the planet.

The content, which was previously displayed at a rate of 60 frames per second (fps), will now be projected at twice the speed, 120fps, for a super-high-definition, hyper-real experience.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, located in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter zone, is one of Universal’s most innovative rides. It combines robotic arm technology with a thrilling filmic story in which guests fly on broomsticks alongside Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, playing Quidditch and encountering a dragon.

The introduction of the state-of-the-art projection technology will help keep the ride exceeding audience expectations, making the media content sharper and clearer than ever before.

“This progressive enhancement replaces the earlier 3D film component of the ride to create a seamless integration between the ride’s elaborate sets and its spellbinding media,” said a statement from Universal Parks and Resorts.

“The new ride media now displays at twice the frame rate offering superior clarity and remarkably sharper images than previously shown, with imagery that is stunningly ultra-realistic.”

The recent release of Ang Lee's Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, the first movie to be shot at 120fps, in 4K 3D and with a screen luminance of 28 foot-lamberts, brought the technology to the attention of a wider public audience.
